The Deteriorating relationship between Fateh and Hamas

2007-01-30

The continually deteriorating Palestinian security situation emerging from the Fateh - Hamas conflict is angering the silent majority of Palestinian citizens. Both parties previously upheld that Palestinian blood is “red line” not to be crossed. Despite this, violent confrontations continued to take place in the last few weeks, causing a tenth of all causalities.

Several attempts have been made to stop the bloodshed to no avail. The Arab Thought Forum organized a debate in Jerusalem on January 30th 2007 with the participation of community leaders including the Grand Mufti and the Orthodoxy‘s Metropolite of Jerusalem as well as representatives of the political parties and civil society organizations. Working groups were established during the meeting to plan the appropriate activities in protest against the violence.

Following the debate, it was agreed to issue a statement on the issue and two demonstrations were organised in protest against the violence, one in front of the presidential compound and the other on front of the cabinet offices in Ramallah.
