2008-04-16

During his visit to Palestine, President Jimmy carter met on April 15th, 2008 with Dr. Hanna Nasir, the Chairman of Central Election Commission and Mr. Abdel Rahman Abu Arafeh, the Director of the Arab Thought Forum.

The discussion focused on electoral reform and encouraging reconciliation in Palestine. The thrust of the discussion was aimed at:

  • Key areas of electoral reform that a joint TCC/ATF/CEC project could address, via inter-party dialogues, workshops and public town hall meetings.
  • The potential for electoral  reform dialogue to reinforce political reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas.
  • Complementary activities that could be conducted to support the central electoral comission through civic outreach, voter education and staff capacity building efforts.
