Arab peace initiative in the balance

The Arab Peace Initiative has been the subject of discussion by a group of Palestinian activists in a public debate organized by the Arab Thought Forum on May 8th, 2007. Mr. Hani al-Hassan, member of Fateh central committee and Qais Abdel kareem member of the DFLP political bureau were the main participants in the debate along with a number of Palestinian political activists, Mr. al-Hassan focused on the strategic situation in the Middle East that resulted in the birth of the Arab Peace Initiative, while Mr. Abdel kareem focused on the functions that the initiative serves, the unification of the Arab position within a minimum rights framework, and influencing public opinion by a balanced initiative that respects all parties.
Several views were expressed, particularly concerning the Israeli and even the American attempts to minimize the Arab conditions to achieve possible peace in the Middle East.
